Katia Vanlandingham is a figurative oil painter from Baltimore MD. She is currently living in New Haven CT, while finishing up her final semester at Yale University. She is interested in the purpose of figurative portraiture in our modern world. Her paintings focus on silence, intimacy, and the relationship between the subject and the painter. Alongside fine art, she studies modernist English literature. She is interested in the way that literature and painting go hand in hand as a way of expressing the feeling of being alive. She believes that abstracted painting, much like abstracted modernist literature, is able to get closer to reality than a perfectly realistic image. She is currently working on a body of self-portraiture, which investigates how these abstractions help us perceive ourselves. Overall, she wishes to paint portraits in order to connect with the people around her, and to represent an image of our current time.
