Biil Thauer is an award-winning objective-thinking designer first. But has always loved scenic photography too. He was born, in 1947, in the midwest – in Grand Rapids, Michigan, and attended University of Michigan College of Architecture, where he found that he was much more interested in the design process, than any specific type of utilization.
He worked in the architecture field for about a decade, then transitioned to a career more focused on branding, packaging and marketing, beginning with a stint as design director for a mid-sized CPG company on Cape Cod, in Massachusetts. What brought him to love the Cape even more was that was where his wife, Ginger, was born and raised. And, since the 1980s, has been designing award-winning solutions for clients, in his own practice or freelancing ever since...
He has loved the American coast since being introduced by her fifty-some years ago. He has been shooting coastal, marine and nautical subjects and places ever since. As a professional art director and designer, he at last became his own client, and now has begun to think more subjectively as an artist.
His first major collection of fine art works the calls the Great American Coastal Icons™ Collection to commemorate and celebrate some of America’s most popular iconic coastal travel and vacation destinations. And, to be inclusive of many lesser known, harder-to-find (mostly) lighthouses, he has developed a second complementary collection he calls Inglourious Beacons™. To date he has created over two dozen woorks, with many more to come...
Since most of the subjects in this collection were built or initially ‘discovered’ in the 19th or early 20th centuries, and he already loved the arts and crafts movement style from that time period, he created them to appeal to aficionados of that style. More popular now, that when it was originally developed. Sort of a more modern take, with a vintage look that would look good in any craftsman bungalow or beach cottage.
All art works utilize his own personal authentic collection of location photos assembled over fifty years. He calls it CapeScapes™ Coastal Scenics. With custom-modified typography and a bit of historic information added to complete the look.
