During the peak bloom in June of 2022, I was invited to a grand peony farm in New Jersey. I took thousands of photographs and brought home an armful of flowers. Each day, the petals opened and revealed surprising interiors, and I continued taking photos. Finally at my easel in September, I chose the most arresting photo as reference. It took 35 hours to capture all the lustrous detail using pen and colored pencil.
