Shelby K. Smith is a modern art enthusiast. She approaches art from an aesthetic perspective with the goal of evoking in the viewer a sense of visual delight. Inspired by minimalism and abstract art, her paintings are structured and precise. There is an element of order and a rhythm to her work. She plays with straight and curved lines to form simple shapes and patterns in her designs. Color plays a big role. Shelby has always been fascinated by the emotional power of color. She is drawn to bright, bold and saturated palettes and likes to incorporate different textures and finishes into her paintings. Shelby works in the large-scale. She loves how geometric shapes can have a powerful presence when painted on an oversized canvas. Many of her pieces are designed as a set of two or three across multiple panels. A self-taught artist, Shelby established her color theory in the beauty industry. During a 30-year career, she worked as a marketing executive, developing brands and shade collections at companies such as Estée Lauder, L'Oreal, Bobbi Brown and more. Shelby earned a B.S. in Business Administration from the University of Florida and an M.A. in Communications from Fordham University. Originally from Newton, Massachusetts, Shelby lives in the coastal town of Darien, CT with her husband and two boys.
