Riley Hodson, a multimedia artist, whose creative journey has been defined by exploration and transformation, has carved a path with relentless exploration and evolving creativity. With roots in photography and a love for aesthetics, Riley's artistic signature is evident in his wide-ranging portfolio which can be viewed via his website RileyHodson.com
Riley, a native of New Haven, Connecticut, has always leaned towards arts, spending a great deal of his time nurturing his creativity. His educational journey led him to Sarah Lawrence College, providing him the opportunity to learn from the distinguished fine art photographer, Joel Sternfeld. As Sternfeld’s student and assistant, Riley was able to refine his professional photography skills and deepen his understanding of the emotive power of imagery.
His professional photography career includes assisting Sternfeld on a cover shoot for Jasper Johns for the New York Times Magazine and covering the New York climate march for Vogue magazine. These experiences sharpened his technical proficiency and underscored the importance of using imagery to encapsulate life's realities.
When the pandemic presented new challenges, Riley responded with resilience, pivoting his artistic focus from photography to painting. He began to experiment with abstract expressions, using bold colors and intricate textures to bring his canvases to life. His work draws viewers into a world where emotions are translated into dynamic brushwork.
Congruent with his painting, Riley has embarked on a unique project featuring an alter ego, Robert. In this narrative, Robert personifies a solitary cowboy. Riley uses this character to delve into his personal experiences, using Robert as a symbolic reflection of his own life's hurdles. The ultimate objective is to encourage viewers to reflect on their own life journeys, finding comfort in the understanding that experiences, whether triumphant or challenging, are shared aspects of human existence.
